Movie filming: “The Year of Easter”

March 29, 2008

Year of Easter
Lights, camera, action… in America’s oldest city. A movie is being filmed in St. Augustine called “The Year of Easter.”

It’s based on a true story about a little Lebanese girl — Yvonne Rice — who grew up in St. Augustine in the 1950s.

Executive Producer Derek Hankerson said, “In the 1950s, we had civil unrest in St. Augustine and throughout the state and U.S. Yvonne’s family was very instrumental in assisting a number of families to include African American families, and they were ostracized for it.”

The independent film is being shot entirely in St. Augustine.

Some of it was filmed in December. More will be done in April and in the summer.

Yvonne Rice and Derek Hankerson are still looking for extras and people who would like to be in the movie. They’re especially looking for baby boys ages two weeks to one year for filming during the week of April 7th - 12th..

If you’re interested, contact Rice at 1-800-383-0353 for an audition appointment.

Read more about the making of this pre-civil rights era film about St. Augustine on the local discussion forum at http://plazabum.com/viewtopic.php?t=1564 including comments posted by Yvonne Rice.

One of the many ironies in attempting to unravel the ’50s and early ’60s and interpret them to today’s generation is that those individuals - white and black (Caucasian and Negro in the language of that day) - who quietly ignored the institutionalized segregation and angry racists of all shades, and began breaking down the barriers with small steps of de facto integration, are most often overlooked.

In addition to Yvonne, I am glad that Derek Hankerson is participating as “Executive Producer ” of this film.

Local stories should be told by local people who know the history of events.

As an idependent writer/film buff - I have followed a lot of the Clubhouse Productions - Rice/Cummings works and have always been impressed with the simplistic purity of the work. The stories are always “honest” and have a sense of purity. I believe that is because they have never been effected by the networks or hollywood types that are just going after a buck instead of telling a beautiful story. I truly believe they should send this next work to the film festivals and to the larger studios to teach them how to tell a story again. “The Notebook” took this approach and it turned a bunch of small time actors and directors into superstars. I eagerly await the completion of The Year of Easter.
