ZZ TOP at St. Augustine Amphitheatre
April 23, 2008

Well, either you know and love hard rock and ZZ TOP or you don’t. There isn’t much middle ground. If you are into rock at all, it has been pretty hard to miss them. From their first big concerts and hits in the early 70’s, right up through their introduction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, they have been the same guys and the same group.
Hit albums include the first big one “Tres Hombres” (which included “La Grange” – a tribute to the “establishment” in the moving “Best little whorehouse in Texas”) up though “The Eliminator” in the ‘80s (“Gimmie all your lovin,” ) and “Afterburner” and “Recycling” in the 90s, just to hit a (very) few of the high spots.
Now they have CD Anniversary re-issues and (if you are lucky) you can find one of them.
The trio is known for their appearance as well. The chest length beards have been a trademark since the beginning of the group. The press releases say Gillette offered them a million dollars to shave them off, but they declined saying “Oh, we’re too ugly!”
The one with just a moustache? It’s O.K.; his name is “Beard,” Frank Beard.
Beard, Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons have been working together since the group formed. It isn’t clear if the other half of the “uniform” (sunglasses) came before their song “Cheap sunglasses,” afterwards, or with it!
However you want to cut it, they are big time and will be appearing at the St. Augustine Amphitheater on May 23rd. traditionally, pre-sale tickets are available through their Fan Club web site. I don’t know if that will be the case (or if there is time for it) for our show but if you are really into it, you might check. Stay tuned.

never a prolific band ,14 albums, (not counting the greatest hits compilations), in 37 years, they have always stayed true to their texas roots.
this ought to be a top notch show.
thans for the heads up, MacV.
Will their ladies and the red hot rod be there?
1st concert I ever attended, circa 1974 I think it was (ok ok, I am NOT going to count David Cassidy in 6th grade…was escorted by parent!). Memorable *smiles*
