About the editorial page
May 18, 2008

The editorial page at Historic City News is where we will express opinions on topics that have been reviewed by a three person panel of guest editors.
The opinions published may not have been unanimously held; but they will reflect the major leaning of our editorial panelists.
From time to time we will also publish Letters to the Editor and Guest Editorials - the opinions held solely by the individual writer; not necessarily by Historic City News and Media editors or the editorial panelists.
We will also be compiling a series of editorials that are commentaries on public administration issues within our city and county government. This series of editorials will be titled, “Historic City Undercover”. I think you will enjoy them and find the “inside” view both informative and enlightening.
Agree or disagree with the opinions expressed - they are concluded based on actual experiences between our editorial reporters and representatives of our local government.
Please use our contact form to submit your letter or column for consideration.
Unlike other media sources in St. Augustine, we encourage lively debate on all opinions published and give you the power to voice objections or agreements any time you like.

Sounds good. Go for it.

be careful what you wish for…
I don’t know, scrutney. I can listen to other points of view on my opinions. I’ve even been known to change my mind when properly persuaded. Agreements are appreciated and objections are considered.
Who knows …. we might learn something from one another.
i’m usually informed and very opinionated on national politics…but until recently,i paid very little attention to the local scene.
that’s why i’m glad y’all launched historic city media…
i’ll be watching, reading and learning.
“Commentaries on public administration”
are most welcome, as such editorials can concentrate on the processes and procedures of local government - and not the personalities and perceived characteristics of individuals.
Not that there is anything wrong with op-eds and commentaries on individuals themselves, but that is a separate issue from administration.
Some suggestions for topics:
- Transparency regarding lawsuits against the county, cities, their employees, and other taxing authorities.
Fault? Financial payouts? Policy changes? Punishment of employees at fault?
- Custodianship of public funds collected and held by the various government entities, pending expenditure (bonds, fees, taxes, etc.).
Invested? Local banks/credit unions? Other? Who determines? Competitive? Rate of return?
I suggest these two NOT because of any suspicion or allegation of fraud or abuse, but simply because for a variety of reasons - some good and some bad - these two processes can slide below the public view and even the regular oversight of elected representatives.
In my almost 40 years of following St. Johns county/cities/agencies government, (including investigating and writing for a newspaper) the above two administrative functions have cost the taxpayers a chunk of money, or at least a loss of what could have been earned to help reduce taxes.
