My congratulations to EPIC on their 35th birthday - I know at least two of the original Board of Directors are still around, and hope they will be there struttin’ their ‘73 stuff.
As some of you oldtimers know EPIC rose like a phoenix from the ashes of JAM HOUSE Inc., when that earlier private non-profit Drug Abuse & Mental Health Prevention and Treatment Center (originally at 48 Charlotte St.) voluntarilly de-organized when much of its mission had been accomplished, and state/county agencies were established to provide mental health services in St. Johns County.
But a huge gap in children’s and teenager’s preventative substance abuse programs remained, and the JAM HOUSE Directors immediately established EPIC for the young people of the community.
I was the last Executive Director of JAM HOUSE INC., and remain proud of the services our small staff provided to children, teenagers, adults in the community, as well as to SAPD, SJCSO, and inmates of the jail during those years when we provided the bulk of mental health, substance abuse treatment and prevention - and even a 24-Hour suicide prevention and emergency mental health referral Hotline - until the state legislature and county commission established Tri-County Mental Health.
