Historic City News readers know that thousands of Jews fled Spain during the mid-16th century to avoid the Spanish Inquisition; giving rise to speculation that some may have accompanied Pedro Menendez in 1565 — which would make St Augustine the first Jewish settlement in the New World.
A “Marrano”, a Jew pretending to be a Christian, would be prosecuted and killed by the “Finders” for the Holy Roman Church if they were discovered.
In a one person show, playwright Lee Weaver delivers a stunning portrayal of one man filled with confusion, anger, conflicting loyalties and a determination to be just, merciful and humble when the Spanish Inquisition came to St Augustine.
Weaver tells the story of a family’s struggle against monumental obstacles; including religious intolerance, pirate attacks, Indian attacks, and sickness — as well as the discovery of Marranos in the community.
Weaver’s play, “The Secret” will be performed at the Pioneer Barn Theater at Fort Menendez located at 259 San Marco Avenue in St Augustine on January 4, 5, 11, 12 at 7:30 p.m. with Sunday matinees January 6, 13 at 2:00 p.m. Reservations 904-824-8874
