NPS Ranger Joe Brehm reported to Historic City News that Labor Day, Monday September 3, would be the last day that Castillo de San Marcos National Monument will be open extended hours, as the fort’s fall operating schedule returns.
Beginning Tuesday, the Castillo will open daily at 8:45 a.m. and close at 5:15 p.m., an hour earlier than during the summer.
Historic weapons demonstrations will continue at Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monuments, weather and staff permitting. Cannon demonstrations at the Castillo are scheduled on Friday, Saturday and Sunday; 10:30, 11:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30.
The next 18th Century Artillery Training class will be conducted on Saturday and Sunday, September 15-16. Prospective students should contact Ranger Brehm at (904) 829-6506 x233 to register. All students must be over 16-years-old and capable of moderate physical activity, Brehm told reporters.
Ranger Chris Leverett reported that tomorrow is the next “First Saturday” cannon firing at Fort Matanzas National Monument. Other firings are planned for October 6, November 3, and December 8.
