Despite the comments of County Commissioner Ronald F. Sanchez during the March 18, 2014 Board of County Commissioners meeting, where he referred to Historic City News managing editor Michael Gold and Ponte Vedra Beach resident Dan Abel as “outsiders”, members of the St Johns County Republican Party took offense at the dismissive and insulting characterization of local residents as “outsiders” when they are inside their elected commissioner’s office.

Gold, who is a St Augustine native, a licensed private investigator, holds a weapons permit, is both a former sworn and former civilian law enforcement employee, holds both FDLE and FBI security clearances, as well as Department of Homeland Security, and passed a pre-employment polygraph for the County, told the Executive Committee members that he resented the inference that he hadn’t first submitted to a “background check”, as suggested by County Administrator Michael Wanchick and County Attorney Patrick McCormack, before entering the office of Commissioner Bill McClure; constructed in one-of-many areas that the administration has declared “secured areas” that are off-limits to ordinary citizens without an escort.

I am no damn outsider,” Gold declared; to applause from those in the audience — many of whom later purchased 3″ buttons intended to be worn inside the 100,000-square-foot, $16.5-million St. Johns County administration building and auditorium, as a tongue-in-cheek “cautionary measure” to alert the county’s “insiders” that there is, at least in Commissioner Sanchez view, an “outsider” in the area.
