Letter: Carriages do not belong in town

To the Editor:

Re: Carriage operator proposes new route

Can there be any doubt that carriages do not belong in St. Augustine?

Life on the streets is misery for the horses who have to pull oversize loads in heavy traffic and in arduous weather conditions.

In the summer, they breathe in lung searing exhaust fumes and plod along scorching asphalt.

They constantly must avoid collisions with careless or impatient drivers—not always successfully.

How many injured horses and hospitalized people will it take before the city council bans them for good?
