“Chamber of Commerce Weather” made this past weekend a perfect Mother’s Day for outdoor activities.
Several outdoor markets were crowded with residents and visitors looking for fresh fruits, vegetables and summertime treats that are always better when enjoyed in the open air.
We visited the farmer’s market at St. Augustine’s Amphitheater on Mother’s Day and were entertained by live bluegrass music and an eclectic mix of diverse foods and out of the ordinary sidewalk vendors.
We went into town for lunch with our son and were hard pressed to find an available parking space anywhere. Good thing I know some secret, well hidden holes to pop into. The parking garage was very active on the final day of the Ancient City Crawfish Boil and the streets were packed with shoppers and tourists taking pleasure in the bargains and discovering the town that we call home.
Few symptoms of a failing economy were evident this Mother’s Day — at least downtown.
We wrapped up the afternoon with the traditional 10 mph cruise from the A Street ramp south to Crescent Beach — one of the many things that the JEEP was designed specifically for. I hope Chrysler works its way through their bankruptcy. I can’t imagine a sunny summer day without a chance to escape to St. Johns county’s beaches in my Wrangler with the top down and the radio playing.
Throngs of beach bunnies swarmed around their pop-up tents, sharing hot dogs, splashing on Hawaiian Tropic and building sand castles galore without any visible signs of a depressed housing market.
All in all, you couldn’t have asked for a brighter day on Sunday. Regardless of how you chose to celebrate this Mother’s Day, I hope everyone got a chance to catch at least one of the many outdoor entertainment selections.
