Restoring a true treasure

Architect Dave Mancino will present his findings on the North City Waterworks Building on San Marco Avenue to commissioners in their regular meeting Monday night according to a report received by Historic City News.

Mancino will make a recommendation to restore the brick building to its original 1883-85 style as the city’s first train depot.

The proposal features a community center with a large interior hall, half round side terrace, front wood platform, and rear add-on for restrooms and catering kitchen.

Mancino has been under contract with the city to research the history and salvageability of the now closed building. “I have come to realize that the building is a true treasure worthy of the substantial effort it will take to restore the structure to public use,” Mancino said.

The restoration estimate: $1.2 to $1.8 million.
