The City of St. Augustine notified Historic City News reporters that federal economic stimulus funds have been used in the construction of a sidewalk along West Castillo Drive from Ponce de Leon Boulevard to San Marco Avenue.
The sidewalk runs along a much traveled thoroughfare and is vital to the safety of pedestrians walking to-and-from events occurring at Francis Field.
Quoc Mai, MAI Engineering Services, Inc. in St. Augustine, began early this summer with design of the project with construction beginning in early August by Transportation Structures, Inc., in Tampa.
City of St. Augustine Deputy Director of Public Works Todd Grant was the city’s oversight and project manager.
The total cost of the project was $128,999.
Special care in the design was given to the many palms and oaks along the roadway with the sidewalk curving around the trees making a pleasant walk for pedestrians.
Mai said the sidewalk is ADA compliant, and is made of coquina concrete which is more costly than regular concrete but blends nicely with the surrounding area of St. Augustine.
