Historic City News has learned that Catherine Patrick, a former St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office sergeant who was known as Catherine Payne, has been arrested and charged with grand theft of an automobile in Clay County.

Patrick made news headlines two-years ago when she took off for Fernandina Beach with her six-year-old son, Reid. A family court judge had awarded sole custody to the boy’s father, Phillip Payne, who is a Florida Highway Patrolman. After a four-hour search failed to locate Patrick, an Amber Alert was issued, then cancelled when Catherine and Reid were located in Nassau County.

According to the arrest warrant, Patrick stole a car on March 22nd in Clay County. The victim told deputies that Patrick took her red 2004 Acura TSX without permission. Although Patrick had been given permission to use the vehicle on occasion, the victim reported that she had not given permission to borrow the car that day. Patrick reportedly took the keys from inside the owner’s home.

Patrick was captured in Camden County, Georgia, and was charged with speeding by the Kingsland Police Department and as a fugitive from justice in Clay County.
