A celebration 500 years in the making
Today, all eyes will be on the Historic City of St Augustine as city residents and visitors celebrate five hundred years, to the day, since Ponce de Leon’s landing in Florida. A full day of activities is scheduled in celebration of “Viva 500”.






The only surviving navigational reading recorded of Ponce de Leon’s journey in 1513 known to Historic City News was taken at a position of 30 degrees 8 minutes north latitude, just off the coast of current day South Ponte Vedra Beach.
St Augustine’s first-ever historic “Pub Crawl” tour was offered on April 4, 2007 and will celebrate its sixth anniversary by offering a 50% discount on qualified bookings made on Thursday, April 4, 2013, for any future date.
Community Awareness Coordinator Kim Brumfield is reminding Historic City News readers in St Augustine and St Johns County that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month; a time to raise public awareness about sexual assault and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.
Public Information Officer Klare Ly announced to Historic City News that Randal Bryan Hart, the 28-year-old St Johns County man accused of stabbing his dog, Amber, and slashing her throat with a knife before dragging her into the woods to die, will be back in court Wednesday afternoon.
The Division of Hotels and Restaurants reports to Historic City News each calendar quarter about St Augustine and St Johns County food service violations observed by Safety and Sanitation Inspectors during routine inspections, as well as those completed in response to complaints.
The St Johns County Transportation Advisory Group notified Historic City News that they will conduct their annual organizational and prioritizing meeting on Friday, April 5, 2013, at 2:00 p.m.; the meeting is open to the public.
Tickets are on sale now for next Sunday’s performance by the legendary band Chicago at the St Augustine Amphitheatre on April 7. Formed in 1967 in Chicago, the self-described “rock and roll band with horns” released their first album “Chicago Transit Authority” in 1969.
