Historic City News has learned that 76 year-old Carrie Johnson, known to local residents as “The Voice of Lincolnville”, is asking for your help in finding the driver of a truck that struck and severely injured her son — then ran away.
“Miss Carrie” is excited to learn that her son can be released from Flagler Hospital soon to begin performing rehabilitation exercises at home.
The accident occurred at 12:05 a.m. on July 7th on Ponce de Leon Boulevard — just north of Anderson Street, according to a report received from police spokesman, Mark Samson.
Charles Barbes, Johnson’s son, was riding his bicycle south on the shoulder of Ponce de Leon Boulevard when he was struck from behind by a pick-up truck.
The 50 year-old Barbes suffered severe head injuries and a fractured spine; he told investigators that he cannot identify the truck by make or color.
Johnson is asking Historic City News readers who might have seen the accident, or the driver, to come forward. She is concerned because, at this point, no one has been able to tell her that “a blue truck, red truck, yellow truck, green truck or whatever hit my son.”
Once released, Barbes is expected to require a walker as he continues to recover from his injuries.
Anyone with information is asked to call the St. Augustine Police Department at 209-3482.
