Early morning fire extinguished

Jeremy Robshaw reported to Historic City news this morning that St. Johns County Fire Rescue responded to a residential structure fire in the 600 block of Intercoastal Circle at approximately 3:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Upon arrival crews found a single story structure with heavy smoke and flames visible from the roof above the garage.

Firefighters began an aggressive attack on the fire and were able to extinguish it quickly containing the fire damage primarily to the garage and attic area, with the rest of the home sustaining smoke and heat damage.

The homes five occupants were alerted to the fire by smoke alarms and all evacuated safely prior to fire rescue arrival.

Two occupants evacuated through a bedroom window and the other three left the house through the front door. Two of the children were evaluated on scene by SJCFR for smoke inhalation, but neither required transport to the hospital.

In a secondary search of the structure firefighters located the family dog “Diamond” partially buried beneath some ceiling material and were able to provide medical care to the dog utilizing specialized pet oxygen masks. The dog’s condition quickly improved and he/she was transferred to the family to be taken to a local veterinary clinic for further treatment.

There were no injuries reported during this incident, and the cause of the fire is under investigation by SJCFR and the State Fire Marshals Office.
