Humane Society sponsors one-day dog classes

The St. Augustine Humane Society notified Historic City News that they will sponsor a series of dog training classes during the coming two months.

Classes begin on April 2nd, April 6th, and May 7th, and are held at the Humane Society; located at 1665 Old Moultrie Road in St. Augustine. Classes are open to dogs of all ages and all skill levels. The cost per four week class is $65 per dog.

On Saturday, April 2 at 9 am, the Open Agility Class will feature a fenced-in course and a positive way for owners to spend time with their dogs; leaping over jumps and tires, weaving through poles, burrowing through a tunnel, walking over a teeter, and more. The obstacles are fun and the exercise creates a strong bond with owners and dogs while working together as a team. The team training also builds confidence, and helps release extra energy, plus provides mental and physical stimulation for the pet.

Also, on Saturday, April 2 beginning at 10 am, the Open Obedience Class will cover games and activities while the dogs learn or re-learn the basics of sit, stay, down, come, walking on a loose leash, and more. Dogs will also learn good manners while socializing with other dogs and people. If the dog is already trained, this class will help to perfect its skills. As a family affair, all family members are encouraged to participate and help with the training.

On Wednesday, April 6 at 6:30 pm, the 6-Legged Fun Agility and Obedience Class will feature obedience with agility for fun and educational training. In obedience, the dog will learn basic commands, good manners and socialization; and owners will learn how to be the effective leader of their dog. In agility, dogs and owners will work together as a team to learn about obstacles as a fun and team training exercise.

The May classes at St. Augustine Humane Society will begin on Saturday, May 7 with Open Agility at 8:30 am and Open Obedience at 9:30 am.

With registration, the following must be provided: proof of vaccinations; six foot leash; water for dog and owner, and bite-sized treats in a treat bag, pocket, or fanny pack.

Owners must wear closed-toed and closed-heeled shoes and comfortable, movable clothing.
