Sgt. Chuck Mulligan reported to Historic City News that, last night, deputies from the St Johns County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit responded to an accident where a young boy was injured by a hit and run driver.
Deputies found the 5 year-old victim of the crash, Gavin Cade, who had been struck by a Ford pickup truck in front of his residence.
Cade was transported to Flagler Hospital by his mother with what turned out to be non-life treating injuries.
The boy’s mother initially stopped the driver and managed to get his name, but the driver, still in his pickup truck, fled from the scene.
The driver, Geremias Souza, a 43 year-old man reported to be a construction worker from Jacksonville, turned himself into deputies a few hours later.
Souza was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and driving on an expired license — less then 4 months. According to Mulligan, Souza was released on his own recognizance.
