Historic City News has learned that St. Johns County District 3 Commissioner Mark Partridge Miner and Cheryl Joy Whitley were married on Saturday, November 28, 2009 in a sunset ceremony at Alpine Groves Park.
The two-story farmhouse which was the site of the wedding was built in the early 1900’s and moved to the park to represent the history of St. Johns County’s citrus industry.
On August 3, 2009, Miner announced that he is being deployed for a one-year second tour of duty in Iraq and will be taking a temporary leave of absence from his elected duty as County Commissioner.
The Miner’s were married in a civil ceremony performed by Sergeant Major (Ret) Ray A. Quinn.
Miner has requested that Governor Charlie Crist appoint 63 year-old Quinn to be his interim replacement. Quinn retired from the Florida National Guard in 1995 with 30 years of service and is currently Chairman of the St. Johns County Veterans Council. The interim appointment will be decided by the Governor.
The father of the bride strung tin cans from their bumper, “like the old days”. The new Mrs. Miner said, “We did a victory lap and set off car alarms”.
After the private wedding, the couple drove straight to Savannah for their honeymoon, reportedly arriving around 11:00 P.M.
The Miner’s updated their Facebook pages and posted to their personal blogs so that friends and family could follow as they started their new lives together.
Mrs. Miner said, “Breakfast the next morning was AMAZING. They have a buffet, but also a bar where they make eggs, crepes, shrimp and grits, etc.” She continued, “The lady who made our eggs asked me if I was even old enough to legally get married (I took that as a compliment :)”.
