The local news desk at Historic City News has learned that Flagler College Chancellor William L. Proctor has been included in a list of Florida State University’s “100 Distinguished Graduates.”
Proctor, a Florida House Representative from St. Augustine and past-president of Flagler College, graduated from Florida State with a degree in education. He also holds a master’s and a Ph.D. degree from the university.
The “100 Distinguished Graduates” list was included in an edition of the university’s Alumni Association magazine, Vires, in observation of the Association’s centennial year. Florida State has more than 280,000 alumni worldwide. Included on the list are well-known alumni from all walks of life including astronauts, state governors, actors, musicians, athletes and Pulitzer Prize winners.
Former Governor Reuben Askew, former U.S. Senator Mel Martinez, the former superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, astronaut Norm Thagard, actor Robert Urich and Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward have also been recognized with this honorary distinction.
Proctor was first elected to the Florida House in 2004, having served on the Florida State Board of Education from 2001 to 2004. He was president of Flagler College from 1971-2001 and has been active in numerous educational endeavors throughout his career.
Proctor served for 18 years as a trustee of St. Augustine’s Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind and for 12 years as chairman of the board. He also served as Vice Chairman of the Florida Education Standards Commission.
Florida State University has previously honored Proctor with the Distinguished Educator Award and he is member the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
