Spain’s Consul in Miami, Cristina Barrios, confirmed for Historic City News reader Raphael Cosme that 74 year-old King Juan Carlos I of Spain and Her Majesty Queen Sophia would visit St Augustine by the first week of May, 2013.
Mayor Joseph L Boles, Jr. said that he learned of the royal visit during a meeting with Barrios regarding the the 500th and 450th anniversary celebrations.
The monarch’s tour will begin in Miami and continue to Tampa, Orlando, and Saint Augustine.
The City of St Augustine was selected as the central location for the ceremonial acts for the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Florida by Juan Ponce de Leon.
