Amber Grafft-Weiss, Florida Public Archaeology Network Outreach Coordinator, has invited Historic City News readers in St Augustine to attend a free workshop introducing a new book of teacher’s lesson plans; focusing on the people who were living in northeast Florida when the Spanish arrived in the 1500’s.
The compilation of lessons, titled “Timucuan Technology”, is aligned with Sunshine State Standards for sixth through eighth grades. The book examines biotechnology; using hands-on lessons to explore the ways that native Timucuan Indians exploited their habitat to meet basic needs.
Timucuan Technology emphasizes science and math skills for students. It was developed in advance of St Augustine’s 450th anniversary with funding from a state grant.
The book will be introduced at the educator’s workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on June 26 and 27 at the Guana-Tolomato-Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Space is limited and registration will be handled on a first- come, first-served basis. Attendance may qualify participants for continuing education credits. To register for this workshop, please contact Amber Grafft-Weiss at aweiss@flagler.edu.
