First public meeting of Stand your Ground task force

Historic City News in St Augustine has been notified that tomorrow, Tuesday June 12, the Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection holds its first public meeting from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Northland Church located at 530 Dog Track Road in Longwood.

Governor Rick Scott created the Task Force to assess the state’s “Stand your Ground” laws; made controversial in the tragic February 26 shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

The meeting will be opened for public comments after 1:00 p.m.

The focus of the Task force is not the Martin shooting, nor will it be a forum to debate the issues in the instant case against George Zimmerman; the neighborhood watch captain who shot and killed the unarmed 17-year-old boy.

Staunch self-defense advocates of rights protected by the Second Amendment recognize that if a human being is shot and killed, the investigation is not going to be easy for the shooter; nor should it. However, the ensuing jury trial does satisfy public interest in the matter and gives Zimmerman the opportunity he needs to clear his name.
