Jeani Taliaferro told local Historic City News reporters that, each month, St Augustine’s 450th Youth Ambassadors gather to visit selected local historical sites or attend presentations that teach them about the people, places and events that played a part in St Augustine’s history.
The Ambassadors assist with events celebrating our city’s history and represent schools throughout the county; including Bartram Trail, St Joseph Academy, Pedro Menendez, Nease, St. Augustine High School and St Johns Academy, ABLE, home school, Murray, Swiss Point, and Fruit Cove middle schools.
“These Ambassadors represent our city and are committed to assist with the 450th commemoration activities leading up to 2015,” Taliaferro told reporters. “They are sponsored in the program by the St Augustine Historical Society, and can be identified by their official red shirts emblazoned with the St Augustine 450th logo.”
Recently the students, who first applied in the spring of 2010, visited the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park to learn about the place where United States history began.
They have toured the Spanish Quarter, the Castillo de San Marcos, the Mission del Nombre de Dios, the Oldest House, the Lightner Museum, Flagler College, the St. Augustine Record, the Ximenez-Fatio House, the Art Association, the Lighthouse, Pena-Peck House, St. Francis Barracks and taken a Historic Trolley ride and ghost tour.
Next month they will tour the Villa Zorayda.
The 2012-2013 school year begins their second year of participation.
