The signature event of the law enforcement community’s year-round support of Special Olympics is the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, and today, Historic City News reporters were on hand as the St. Johns County leg was run.
For nearly 25 years, the “flame of hope” has traversed Florida in an intrastate relay of simultaneous routes throughout the state; covering countless thousands of miles. The torch is carried by local and state law enforcement officers all the way to the Opening Ceremonies of Florida’s annual State Summer Games.
St. Johns County Deputy Rafael Fuentes coordinated today’s event which began at 4:00 p.m. “We will be running from the Sheriff’s Office to Castillo de San Marcos,” Fuentes said. “It is an unofficial 5K.”
The run route was Lewis Speedway then right onto US-1, left onto San Marco Avenue, continuing south to the Fort.
The Florida Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest annual public relations and fund raising event amongst Special Olympics Florida and law enforcement agencies.
Statewide, the participating chiefs, officers, sheriffs, deputies, agents and cadets from virtually every branch of federal, state, county and municipal law enforcement, represent a total of over 300 different agencies.
Several law enforcement agencies were represented, who participated in the event by providing a law enforcement vehicle for the motorcade of runners.
Commenting on the success and turnout for today’s event, Fuentes told Historic City News, “Thank you for your support of the Law Enforcement Torch Run and our true heroes, Special Olympics Athletes.”
