Historic City News has confirmed that a 20-year-old St Augustine woman, who FHP Homicide Investigator Pete Young previously reported to have suffered fatal injuries in a crash early Saturday morning, is, in fact, alive and in critical condition as of Sunday evening.
A 2011 Bash Scooter driven by 20-year-old Chelsea Marie Wantz who lives at 216 Argonaut Road in St Augustine, was struck from behind at about 3:25 a.m. by a 2002 Ford Taurus being driven by 19-year-old Christopher R. Langford, who resides at 165 Calle Madrid.
The crash report filed with the Florida Highway Patrol says that both vehicles were traveling northbound on US-1 in the right traffic lane.
After the collision, the Taurus came to rest in the median; Wantz was thrown from the scooter, and her body landed in the roadway on impact. She was wearing a helmet when the crash occurred, the investigation revealed.
The front end of the Taurus burned and the scooter was fully in flames, according to the incident report filed Sunday.
Emergency medical personnel with St Johns County Fire Rescue secured Wantz for transportation to Flagler Hospital in St Augustine. She was transferred to Shands Medical Center in Jacksonville, due to the extent of her injuries.
Langford sustained minor injuries and about $2,000 in damage to his vehicle. His passenger, 18-year-old Matthew D Lightsey, also of St Augustine, was uninjured in the crash.
Charges are pending receipt of blood alcohol tests and the completion of the investigation.
