As is customary to honor the memory of former mayors and commissioners as well as recipients of the two highest honors offered by the City of St Augustine, Historic City News reports that the flags at City Hall were lowered to half-staff yesterday in tribute to Jerry Kass.
Only two years after the special recognition was created, in October 1977, Kass received the Order of La Florida; considered the highest honor bestowed by the City of St Augustine. The award may only be held by eight living people at any given time.
The Order of La Florida is awarded for outstanding community service to residents who have tirelessly devoted their time and talent over a long period of time.
Jerry Kass passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at the Bailey Family Center for Caring in St Augustine at the age of 98-years-old.
