PZB hears three requests for city landmarks

Architect, and former City Commissioner, Don Crichlow will appear before the St Augustine Planning and Zoning Board on Tuesday, January 8; asking for permission to remove preserved trees as part of the site development for a new Mellow Mushroom restaurant.

The site on Anastasia Boulevard was originally Alexander’s Ranch House restaurant; the landmark building was demolished last year to make way for the “art modern” design Mellow Mushroom — a restaurant chain, begun in 1974.

Also coming before the Board Tuesday, in addition the Mellow Mushroom, are applications regarding two other St Augustine landmark buildings; the former Hamblen Hardware building on King Street, and the former gun museum building on Spanish Street.

KMPN Investments, LLC will seek a “use by exception” to allow alcohol sales at a proposed convenience store to be located in the Hamblen Hardware building.

Contractor, and former St Augustine Mayor, Len Weeks, will seek a variance to “side yard building setbacks” for construction of a new two-story Spanish Colonial style building where the single-story building currently exists.
