Today, Historic City News local reporters are participating in state and local celebrations of Flag Day – the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777.
On August 3rd, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as “National Flag Day” even though, thirty years prior, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation establishing a Flag Day in commemoration of the event.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist said today, “The American flag is representative of our country’s strength, freedom and unity. The 50 stars and 13 stripes are recognized worldwide as the symbol of American liberty, justice and opportunity. Wherever our flag is flown, our legacy as a democratic nation is on display.”
Unfortunately, Flag Day doesn’t get the same attention as Independence Day, Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day — however, as Americans, we should remember our flag and what it stands for every day.
In his announcement, Crist said, “Today, I encourage Floridians to join me in paying special tribute to Old Glory. By reflecting on our rich history, we honor the American men and women who founded our great nation, as well as the service men and women in the Armed Forces and Florida National Guard who continue to bravely defend the spirit our flag represents. We are blessed to live in America and take pride in the red, white and blue.”
