Greenfield Drive fire result of lightning strike

St. Johns County Fire Rescue told local Historic City News reporters that emergency personnel responded to a residential structure fire stemming from a lightning strike on Greenfield Drive late Monday afternoon.

Dispatchers were informed that the home was struck by lightning and had flames showing from the roof. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found a single story residential structure with significant smoke showing from the roof and eaves. Firefighters were able to established a water supply.

When firefighters entered the attic space above the garage, they found a working fire rapidly spreading through the roof structure.

Initial crews made an aggressive attack on the fire and were able to extinguish the flames quickly limiting the damage to the roof and attic space. Salvage covers were deployed inside the home to protect the homes contents and prevent further water damage.

The home and attic area were searched multiple times using heat detecting camera’s to ensure all fire was extinguished prior to the situation being declared under control.

In total five SJCFR apparatus and 12 personnel responded to the structure fire. There were no injuries reported and damages are estimated at $5,000.
