Admiral Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles informed local Historic City News reporters that a landing and anniversary commemoration will be held at Mission Nombre De Dios on Saturday, September 7th; celebrating the founding of St Augustine, four-hundred and forty-eight years ago.
The annual re-enactment of the September 1565 landing of Menendez and his crew of Spanish explorers will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will end, approximately, at noon, according to Davis Walker, spokesman for Florida Living History, Inc.
In addition to the historical re-enactment of Admiral Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés’ landing, this year’s heritage event will include a mass of thanksgiving, celebrated by Bishop of St. Augustine, Felipe J. Estévez. A grand procession will follow leading participants to a performance of a scene from Lope de Vega’s “The New World discovered by Christopher Columbus” performed by Theater with a Mission.
Additional Founders Day activities will take place, next door, at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park following the performance.
Admission to the Mission grounds is free of charge to all Historic City News readers.
The anniversary honors the day that Don Pedro Menéndez De Avilés stepped ashore on Matanzas Bay, founding the settlement of St Augustine; which today stands as the oldest, continuously occupied, European city, port, and parish in the continental United States.
Performance of “The New World discovered by Christopher Columbus” funded by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council through the National Endowment for the Humanities. Support Is Provided, In Part, By NTE Solutions And The Florida Humanities Council.
