Spanish Bakery to reopen on St George Street

Following a two month project of refurbishing the kitchen, Historic City News was informed that the Spanish Bakery, located at 42-1/2 St George Street is scheduled to re-open its doors on Thursday, September 12th.

For more than 37 years, the Adelsperger family has owned and operated the St George Street icon. Most recently their son Gene operated the business after his parents, Dewey and Marge Adelsperger retired.

“This is a great opportunity to continue the long standing tradition that the Adelsperger family started,” says Virginia Whetstone. “Authentic Spanish empanadas, sausage rolls, soups, almond cookies and fresh bread will once again be available.”

The Spanish Bakery is an icon in St Augustine that tourists seek, locals love, and school groups enjoy. Whetstone told Historic City News local reporters that Gene Adelsperger will continue on as the Chef of the Spanish Bakery.

“We are proud to ensure that the Spanish Bakery continues its historical character and service to its many loyal customers,” Whetstone said.

The University of Florida manages the property; known to most locals as the Salcedo House and Kitchen.
