Remembering the terrorist attacks 12-years later

City Fire Chief Mike Arnold invited all Historic City News readers to attend the annual Ceremony of Remembrance on Wednesday, September 11, at 8:30 a.m. to remember those who died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

The ceremony will be held at the St Augustine Fire Department’s main station, located at 101 Malaga Street.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in this community ceremony.

The city’s first Ceremony of Remembrance was held in the Plaza de la Constitution; just two days after the 9/11 attacks. The community has come together each year on the anniversary of the attack.

The program, lasting approximately fifteen minutes, will include a presentation of the colors by the St Augustine Police Department Honor Guard, an invocation by Larry Clay, St Augustine Fire Department Chaplin, musical presentations by Rob Peck, and remarks from Vice-Mayor Nancy Sikes-Kline.

The ceremony will conclude with a minute of silence at 8:45 a.m., timed to coincide with the time the first plane hit the first tower of the World Trade Center in New York City in 2001. The silence will be broken with the ringing of the Fire Department’s historic 1900 fire bell — twelve times; once for each year since the attacks.
