Local St. Augustine reporters at Historic City News have learned that Wednesday morning, Police Officer Walt Makowski responded to 865 Fish Island Road to investigate the theft of solid copper wire.
Representatives from AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Metro PCS each claimed to be victims of varying amounts of copper that was stolen from the Fish Island cell phone tower during the night. All three companies told police that they had the area secured but the chains and padlocks were also stolen.
The value of the copper ground leads and grounding wires was not estimated by police; however, copper material is valuable and the frequent target of theft from commercial and public utility station sites.
Community Affairs Officer Barbara Stevens of the St. Augustine Police Department reports that the investigation is ongoing.
