Feature: St Joe student selected for Girls State

Since 1938, the Florida American Legion Auxiliary has sponsored the annual Girls State program to stimulate a desire to protect the privileges and responsibilities of our democratic form of government in High School Juniors, like Samantha Cosme.

Cosme, who attends St. Joseph Academy, was chosen by St Augustine American Legion Post 37 to be this year’s delegate to the session held at Florida State University in Tallahassee.

“Our selection committee interviewed eligible applicants and chose Samantha to be our delegate because she has a great resume, and she demonstrated to us that she is already a great citizen,” said Joan Kozlowski, a thirty one year member of the St. Augustine Post.

Kozlowski explained that the Girls State program is a non-partisan, non- political, non- sectarian attempt to instill a love of God and country in the youth of America.

Cosme says her goal is to learn to be a civic leader. The student delegates attend the session and take on the roles of senators, lawyers, doctors or teachers. They learn not only about government, but also about being a true friend and good citizen.

“This has been such an incredible and educational experience,” Cosme said, reflecting on the experiences she shared with the other delegates. “I have met so many talented young ladies who share my goals.”

According to Cosme, Political Science will be her major in college.
