Historic City News readers will receive free admission to one of St Augustine’s most popular historic attractions, the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, as part of the Presidents Day celebration.
Monday, February 16th, activities have been planned throughout the day, according to Park Ranger Ted Johnson.
A special attraction in honor of Presidents Day, at 11:00 a.m. and again at 1:00 p.m., Janiyah Jackson of West Augustine’s Kids Safe Zone will recite President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address from memory.
An artistically creative tribute to several of the area’s most prominent African American men and women will be performed by Bernadette Reeves and members of the local African American community, with four presentations; at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 Noon, 2:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.
This prideful presentation will incorporate music, dance and spoken word, to pay homage to such great unsung heroes as General Jorge Biassou, Antonio Proctor, Alexander Darnes, Rev. Goldie Eubanks, Rosalie Gordon Mills, and Dr. Robert B. Hayling, who have contributed greatly to the ongoing struggle for dignity, respect, and racial equality.
