Historic City News editor, Michael Gold, attended this morning’s “Coffee with the Mayor” event at DOS Coffee; an hour-long social event open to the public each month, where the discussion of city government is carried out in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.
Today was the fourth of the popular monthly meetings and was attended by some thirty-five residents and local business owners. Some have attended regularly since January, while each new coffee introduces the mayor to a few new faces.
“Nancy Shaver is certainly the people’s mayor,” Dan Sullivan told Gold. “She’s approachable, she’s smart, and she listens to the concerns of all residents in St Augustine, not just the elite insiders.”
Questions and discussion of local issues actually ran long this morning with arguably the most engaged crowd to date — some came with notes and questions written down.
Gold noted the diversity of the group which is reflective of our multi-cultural community. Young mothers, singles, couples, relatives, workers and retirees, men and women, those who wrote on a notepad and those who wrote on an i-Pad.
The two hot topics this morning related to mobility and infrastructure — both issues which influenced the outcome in the November election; rejecting the eight-year malaise of former mayor Boles and embracing Mayor Shaver with her honest, down-to-earth, no-frills governance.
The coffee next month will likely be on Anastasia Island. Look for an announcement in Historic City News, or on the mayor’s website: nancyshaver.com. You can follow Mayor Shaver on twitter and like her public facebook page.
