The Consul General of Spain, Maria Cristina Barrios-Almazor, confirmed today for Historic City News that they have requested a meeting between St Augustine Mayor Nancy Shaver and United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Spain, James Costos.
The meeting is tentatively set for next Wednesday, July 15. The time and place for the meeting has not yet been announced; however, the Ambassador will be flying in to Jacksonville International Airport from Washington D.C. as early in the day as possible. If all goes well, they will leave Jacksonville the following day.
Being aware of conflicts already announced by the Royal Couple and the September dates for the Celebrate 450th events, Historic City News previously reported that it was “not likely” they would attend and participate in those ceremonies — the information we obtained today only confirms that.
The good news is that it might work out for the Royal Couple to visit St Augustine later in September; possibly on the 18th and 19th. The main purpose of the meeting next week is to go over the itinerary for the Royal Couple; so that if they ultimately do attend, albeit too late for any of the already planned celebration events, there can still be some appropriate recognition.
