He was a US Army disabled Vietnam Veteran who suffered long-term effects from exposure to Agent Orange. Romano earned a BSBA at the University of Illinois, and worked for 25-years as a manager in corporate finance.
Historic City News first became aware of Romano in 2001, when he moved to the Lincolnville neighborhood in St Augustine and became active in the local community. In 2006 he raised $6,478 in an unsuccessful campaign against former Mayor George Gardner for St Augustine City Commission Seat 3. Although Romano never served in elected office, he contributed greatly to his adopted home.
He served as president of the Lincolnville Neighborhood Association for two terms and was a member of the neighborhood crime watch during more than five-years in which he was a homeowner.
Romano will be remembered in the community for his work as a facilitator for the University of Florida, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, during the 2004 study “Neighborhood Plan for St. Augustine’s Lincolnville”. He was host for the University of Notre Dame presentation of St. Augustine’s Future Vision in 2005.
Transportation was Romano’s passion. He was president of “SAM”, a non-profit corporation for the advocacy of electric, narrow gauge public rail transportation for the St. Augustine Metro Area. During 2005, he was a presenter at the Livable Cities Conference on Public Transportation held in St. Augustine.
He later resided at 172 Bermuda Court in Ponte Vedra Beach and coached St Johns County Youth Basketball for four years.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
