On Friday, September 18th, Historic City News readers are encouraged to attend “A Night Out at the Museum”, presented by the Anniversary to Commemorate the Civil Rights Demonstration, Inc.
The night’s events will feature Dr. Robert B. Hayling, local leader of the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement, and Attorney Lorenzo Chambliss of Fremont, California. Guests will arrive at the Civil Rights Museum, located at 79 Bridge Street, in St Augustine, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The program is scheduled to continue until 9:00 p.m.
In 1963, Chambliss, a first year law student at Boalt Hall in Berkley, California, applied and was accepted into the recently created Law Students Civil Rights Research Council (LSRRC) which involved 15 law schools. The LSRRC planned a summer internship program for the South. Chambliss was chosen to go to St Augustine to help volunteer lawyers with various civil rights cases.
He worked as a law clerk out of Dr. Hayling’s dental office with Attorney Earl Johnson of Jacksonville as well as ACLU Attorney Tobias Simon of Miami.
He also worked with lawyers from the Lawyers Constitutional Defense Council (LCDC) filing papers for them in the Federal Court in Jacksonville, did legal research, drove them to court, appeared in court with them, drove them other places they needed to go, acted as a tester, and performed other tasks as directed.
He met Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rev. Andrew Young, Rev. Hosea Williams, Rev. CT Vivian, and other civil rights leaders with whom he says, Dr. Hayling was the most impressive.
The public is invited to attend as he shares his incredible experiences. Limited Space so, please RSVP by calling Gwendolyn Duncan (904) 599 7739 or by Email: gwen062856@aol.com
