Historic City News learned that there was a picnic lunch for city employees and volunteers in the community who worked behind the scenes in many capacities to make Celebrate 450! a success. Mayor Nancy Shaver took her turn serving baked beans and pitching in with the chores during the two-hour event at the city’s Main Fire Station on Malaga Street.
St Augustine Fire Department Chief J.C. Costeira and the city firefighters were “hamburger and hot dog” chefs for the casual lunch that was enjoyed by several hundred people.
Julee Cook, who works at the police department a block away, was already working on the serving line when Mayor Shaver arrived. “I stepped in for Julee during the last hour, so she could enjoy the picnic with the rest of her friends and co-workers,” Mayor Shaver said.
In addition to the lunch, hosted by the city, attendees were presented with a 450th Commemoration coin by City Manager John Regan. Commissioners Freeman, Sikes-Kline and Neville also stopped by to say “hello”.
