The National Park Service has invited Historic City News readers to consider volunteer service at one or both of our local National Monuments, Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas. A Volunteer Job Fair originally scheduled for June 6, was rescheduled due to Tropical Storm Colin.
Potential volunteers can meet experienced VIPs (Volunteers-In-Parks) from both National Monuments, chat with them about what they do and why they love it, and get information on how you can Find Your Park and get involved.
“Many people I speak with have thought about volunteering at a national park site as a way to give back to our community, but they are not sure how to get involved,” Jill Leverett told Historic City News this morning. “Our volunteers gain experience in public speaking and communicating with visitors from around the world.”
If you are interested in learning more, join in a volunteering “job fair” in front of the Castillo on Monday, June 20th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
VIPs perform a wide range of tasks at our parks, including historic weapons demonstrations, serving as a deckhand on a ferry boat, operating a visitor center, keeping our beaches clean, giving interpretive programs, assisting with administrative services, and helping visitors get the most out of their experience.
Volunteer hours can also be put towards scholarship requirements for school.
