An inspection of the Historic Solla-Carcaba Building with contractors, the building’s owners, and Historic City Companies, Inc., concluded with the decision earlier today that our offices will have to relocate.
We were notified this weekend that we had to vacate and Monday was our first look at the aftermath that saw flooding up to two-feet above the ground floor level. All our contents were lost, primarily furniture and some electronic equipment. We salvaged our business documents and, of course, our publications are all stored electronically in a secure off-site location.
“We’ve really enjoyed our last several years in the old cigar factory building — its rich history, convenient location and large parking lot being some of the selling points that attracted our company to lease at the location,” Historic City News editor Michael Gold said.
At first we were hopeful that we could work out alternative arrangements to remain at the building. That was our landlord’s first choice, as well as ours. Initially, we hoped rehab might only require 10-days or even two-weeks to complete. We now know that wasn’t practical, even if we were willing to work off of concrete floors. The scope, including drywall replacement, necessary to decontaminate the premises and create a biologically safe environment in which we could return to work will require at least a month, possibly more.
