Live radio talk show on ESPN AM1420

Historic City News learned about what promises to be the southeast’s most comprehensive live radio golf show beginning November 1st on ESPN AM1420.

Broadcast out of the home of the PGA TOUR and the World Golf Hall of Fame, a leading teaching professional and award winning journalist combine to provide a unique aspect to golf on the radio: entertainment.

Teaching professional Mark Spencer has teamed up with Florida Times Union golf columnist Garry Smits for the “Radio Golf Show” on ESPN AM1420.

Beginning November 1st, the Radio Golf Show will air every Saturday from 9am to 10am, LIVE! By having the biggest names in the golf industry as guests, the Radio Golf Show will fill the void caused by traditional radio sports shows. With Mark and Garry each bringing a unique perspective to the table, listeners will learn the ins/outs of the golf industry that traditional sports talk host cannot provide.

Features on the show will include a segment called “Emergency 9 with …”. This will be a segment of 9 ‘quick fire’ questions posed to celebrities/guests of the likes of Jacksonville Jaguars players, famous artists, and some of the biggest names in golf.

Each week, Mark and Garry will also spotlight an industry insider and allow listeners a glimpse into their job not covered in traditional sports media outlets. From players on TOUR to directors of golf facilities around the world, listeners will learn unique facts about these people within an entertaining format.

About the hosts:
MARK SPENCER is the Lead Instructor at the Golfplex Academy, located in Jacksonville FL. Already a veteran of the golf industry at the ‘young’ age of 38, Mark brings first hand experience and knowledge to the conversation. He’s caddied on TOUR for a two time TOUR winner, has himself qualified through the local stage of the US Open twice and played in the USGA’s Mid Amateur. He’s been a sales rep for companies such as Sky Caddie, and has over 15 years experience in club repair and club fitting. As a hobby, Mark worked as a spotter for the Jacksonville Jaguars for 5 years, and currently is the PA voice of the UNF Osprey Athletic program and provides analysis and color for the UNF Baseball radio broadcasts. Personal: Married with two sons.

GARRY SMITS has won 26 state and national awards for writing, page design, editing, investigative reporting and special sections. In other words, he is a traditional journalist and brings a thorough, historical perspective to the table. Garry is a native of Riverdale, Md., suburb of Washington D.C. He is a lifelong Redskins fan who still thinks they don’t make them like Sonny Jurgensen and Larry Brown. He was a sports editor of a weekly paper in Prince Frederick Md. at the age of 19, then the sports editor of the daily Clay Today in Orange Park FL from 1981-82 at the age of 25. He next became sports editor of the St. Augustine Record from 1984-1988. He has since been at the Florida Times-Union covering high schools, FSU, and golf. Garry is married to Mary-Beth, and has a step-daughter Ashley.
