Bicyclist killed on Anastasia Boulevard at poorly marked intersection

Less than 24-hours ago, the St Augustine Police Department informed Historic City News that Kenneth Edward Kurek, who lived at 204 Azalea Court in Saint Augustine, was struck and killed Friday night in a collision with a motor vehicle.

The police department reported that Kurek was traveling southbound on Anastasia Boulevard. Kurek reportedly signaled the motorist at the intersection that he was making a left turn from Red Cox Drive.

“This was a long-time resident with a wife and children,” said area resident Andrew Stack who knew Kurek.” he was simply riding his bike to the concert as so many of us do.”

Children are trying to cross there to get to the Skate Park; parents are backed up to this intersection trying to pick up their kids from R. B. Hunt; paramedics are coming and going to the fire house on the corner, tourists are coming and going from the Lighthouse, the State Park, the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park, and Surf Station all at the same time.

At about 6:30 p.m., Friday night, police closed the intersection near Anastasia Boulevard and Red Cox Road; motorists were instructed to avoid the area or seek an alternate route, Traffic Homicide Units responded to the scene to begin their investigation and the Trauma One air ambulance was enroute to provide emergency medical transportation.

The collision remains an ongoing investigation, according to the St Augustine Police Department. According to information released from the Police, the bicyclist would have celebrated his birthday on November 24. Kurek was flown to Orange Park Medical Center, where he later died as the result of the injuries.

“This is an extremely dangerous intersection,” Stack added. “It’s time to write every one of our elected officials and demand something be done.”
