Historic City News Editor Michael Gold spent the evening with his wife and their grown children enjoying the lights on the city tree and the beautifully decorated gazebo that has been the site of so many memorable Christmas Eves past.
The shops downtown have all closed; some employees only lingering for a glass of holiday cheer before they rush home to assemble toys and surprises for their own children. About 7:00 p.m. those who remain are mostly visitors — many of whom will stay the night.
It seems like there is truly something magical about this night. For those of us fortunate enough to have grown up here, the memories of old friends, classmates, and families is restored when we bump into a neighbor who moved away twenty years ago, or catch a glimpse of someone we haven’t seen in thirty years. They all come back to St. Augustine, if only for this one very special night.
In a couple of hours, we’ll be back for midnight mass; another one of those cherished memories of safer, peaceful times — when people might have shown more respect for one another and their God.
This reporter is pleased to inform you that the holiday traditions are alive and doing well in America’s Oldest City and I hope to be able to bring you the same report for many more years to come.
Merry Christmas and may God bless you; each and every one.
