Historic City News has learned that a series – The Civil War in Northeast Florida – begins tonight with a lecture by Dr. Michael Gannon on St. Augustine Catholics, Slavery, and Secession.
Dr. Gannon is a Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Florida, and a noted author. One of Florida’s foremost historians, Dr. Gannon has published the following books:
The Cross in the Sand: The Early Catholic Church in Florida (1513-1870)
Florida: A Short History, Revised Edition
The New History of Florida
Rebel Bishop: Augustin Verot
Florida’s Civil War Prelate
Michael Gannon’s History of Florida in 40 Minutes
Presented by the Historic St. Augustine Research Institute, the four-part series will continue through February 4th with topics including:
The Struggle for Control of the St. Johns River – January 25th
Meanings of the Civil War: Then and Now – January 31th
The Search for the Jeff Davis – February 8th
All presentations are free and begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Flagler Room at Flagler College.
