Flagler College hosts “Believe in Baracoa”

Historic City News has learned that a public relations group at Flagler College will present “Believe in Baracoa” from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28th at the Gamache-Koger Theater in Flagler College’s Ringhaver Student Center.

“Believe in Baracoa” is a fund raiser that will be open to the public and will consist of a Cuban-style dinner and movie, with all of the proceeds going to assist the St. Augustine Baracoa Friendship Association.

The St. Augustine Baracoa Friendship Association is a nonprofit volunteer organization whose objectives are to establish, promote and foster a spirit of friendship with the citizens of Baracoa and in particular with small, independent groups and associations of handicapped or disadvantaged people in the town of Baracoa, Cuba.

Baracoa is a small town on the easternmost point of Cuba, visited by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Like St. Augustine, it is the oldest continuously inhabited Spanish settlement in Cuba. St. Augustine and Baracoa are historically and culturally linked because of their shared Spanish heritage.

The purpose of this event is to create awareness about the victims of the multiple hurricanes, which devastated Cuba this past season and left Cuban residents with virtually nothing. A representative from the St. Augustine Baracoa Friendship Association will be present at the event to explain the crisis in Cuba to the attendees.

The women’s community service organization from Flagler College, Phi Alpha Omega, contributed a monetary donation that will be used to supply the food.
