Man arrested on felony animal fighting charge
A 52-year old Volusia County man was arrested early Sunday morning on a charge of possession of training devices for animal fighting, a third degree felony, accounding to a media resease received by Historic City News this morning.
St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Media Relations Officer Kevin Kelshaw reported that the suspect, identified as Jamie Alamos, 52, Deleon Springs, was booked into the County Jail and released last night after posting $2,500 bond.
Deputy Sheriff Greg Mullenix was on routine patrol shortly after 4:00 a. m. when he observed a disabled Ford van on the northbound side of I-95 in the area of C.R. 210. Mullenix observed five male subjects around the vehicle — several were attempting to change a flat tire.
The deputy noticed that the rear cargo hatch was open and he observed two wooden containers inside the vehicle. One of the subjects was attempting to cover the containers with a pink sheet.
Upon further investigation the deputy found ten roosters along with assorted equipment alleged to be used in animal fighting. According to the incident report, sheriff’s deputies learned that the subjects were transporting the roosters to an unknown location in Georgia; allegedly to allow them to fight.
St. Johns County Animal Control officers were notified and took possession of the roosters.
A complaint affidavit was signed accusing the suspect’s 17-year old male juvenile son of the same charges. The other occupants of the vehicle were questioned and released.
