Sgt. Charles Mulligan reported to Historic City News this morning that deputies from the St Johns County Sheriffs Office Traffic Unit responded to an ATV crash in Hastings, around 7:45 p.m. last night.
A 14 year-old boy was riding his Honda ATV westbound on Don Manuel Rd when he lost control and flipped the ATV into a water filled ditch. The victim, whose identification has not been reported at this time, was not wearing a helmet.
“Several individuals who live in the area said just prior to the crash he was driving approximately 35 MPH on the roadway, when he turned to look behind him, and apparently lost control of the ATV”, Mulligan said.
He was taken by St Johns County Fire Rescue to Flagler Hospital. After arriving at the hospital, he was presenting symptoms of head trauma and was listed in serious but stable condition.
An air ambulance was summoned and the victim transferred to Shand’s Trauma Center in Jacksonville.
According to the investigator, the victim had recently been provided with a new helmet to wear when riding. Deputy J.D. McGinnis is continuing the investigation into the crash.
