Archaeology and Heritage Education Training

Florida Public Archaeology Network presents Archaeology and Heritage Education Training this summer.

The Florida Public Archaeology Network will offer three Heritage Education teacher training sessions in northeast Florida.

These sessions are designed to familiarize educators with archaeology resources for the classroom that can enhance learning opportunities in math, science, art, and social studies.

Intrigue of the Past is a book that addresses basic scientific and archaeological principles as well as exploring specific studies and ethical issues.

Coquina Queries was created by FPAN to explore archaeology and Florida’s past through coquina, a unique stone native to northeast Florida.

Both publications are aligned with Sunshine State Standards for 4 th and 5th grade students, though they can be adapted for students of any age.

The first training session will take place June 15-17 in Fernandina Beach, at the Amelia Island Museum of History.

At this session we will be joined by Kelley Weitzel, author of the Coquina Queries lessons, who will help facilitate instruction. In addition to her work on these activities, Weitzel has extensive experience with educating kids about the past, including writing books and lessons about Florida’s Indians.

Two encore offerings have been set for July 13-15 St. Augustine and August 12-14 at in DeBary.
